The tyre centres and re-cycling facilities in West Cork and Kerry are beginning to look forward to our frequent visits, since most of our new sculptures this season are made from re-cycled materials. We retrieve objects before they end up in a landfill site. Recession or no recession an amazing amount of sometimes quite useful stuff is still thrown out. They are not easy materials to re-use and make into visually attractive sculptures.
In the case of old tyres we are also battling our dog, Willow, who hates tyres in any shape or form. She attacks them whether they sit on a small wheel barrow, a cement mixer, a car or even our large digger. Her absolute favourite hate object is when the tyres arrive in the form of the postman and his van. One of these days I must stop shouting at her (makes no difference) and simply ask her WHY? Or maybe ask our zoologist daughter for a plausible explanation for "Dog Tyre Syndrome".
